“Tuck Everlasting” Auditions

You're invited to audition for the first Youth Theatre production of CTC's 101st Season, Tuck Everlasting

Adapted by Mark Frattaroli from the award-winning novel by Natalie Babbit
Directed by Scott Dunlap

Auditions will be held in-person on Monday, August 12 and Tuesday, August 13 at 5:00pm at Chattanooga Theatre Centre, located at 400 River Street.

Callbacks will be Thursday, August 15 at 5:00pm.

Video auditions will not be accepted.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

Tuck Everlasting traces Winnie Foster's longing for adventure beyond her yard. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes intertwined with the immortal Tuck family. Upon discovering the magic behind their eternal life, Winnie is compelled to safeguard their secret from those coveting immortality. In the unfolding adventure, Winnie confronts an extraordinary choice: return to her former life or embark on an endless journey with the Tucks.
(This is a NON-musical version of the show.)

ABOUT THE ROLES:

There are a total of 26-30 available roles for teen actors. The production will have two casts, consisting of 6-7 roles for male-identifying and 7-8 roles for female-identifying actors. We are committed to “non-traditional casting,” or “color-conscious casting” of ethnic minority actors in roles where race or ethnicity is not germane. Which means young actors of all races are encouraged to audition. A character breakdown is at the end of this notice.

ABOUT AUDITIONS:

Attend only one audition day; do not attend both. Age requirement: 4th to 12th grade (10 to 18 years old). Audition duration varies from 60 to 90 minutes based on turnout. Free parking is available; please collect a parking pass upon arrival. A link to sign-up for an audition is at the end of this post. Contact Scott Dunlap at scott@theatrecentre.com or call the Box Office at 423-267-8534 (M-F 10am – 2pm) for form issues or inquiries.

Callbacks, if needed, are scheduled for Thursday, August 15 at 5pm. They offer the director a chance to further assess actors. Not everyone will be called back, and being cast is still possible even without a callback.

HOW TO PREPARE:

Registered participants will receive any necessary updates 24 hours before the audition. The auditions will involve acting a monologue and/or scene, along with some improv games based on movement and storytelling. Essential preparation involves listing any potential scheduling conflicts. This information is crucial; we need to know about any absences before casting. Please note, this audition is highly competitive, and by auditioning, you commit to accepting any role offered. Embracing your assigned role and performing to the best of your ability is integral to the learning process of theater.
Your conduct during auditions reflects your behavior in rehearsals and will affect casting choices.

ABOUT REHEARSALS:

Rehearsals may start as early as Monday, August 19, and are typically scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 5-7pm. A tentative rehearsal plan will be provided at auditions, but the final schedule depends on the cast’s availability. Rehearsals may occur on holidays such as Labor Day (September 2) and Rosh Hashanah (October 3-4), as well as Yom Kippur (October 11), but conflicts are still accommodated. However, if absent, actors are responsible for catching up on missed information. Be mindful of any conflicts with the rehearsal schedule and check with teachers and administrators regarding school commitments. When listing conflicts, include sports, school activities, vacations, doctor appointments (avoiding orthodontist appointments during tech and show weeks), birthdays, and other engagements. Prioritize activities and note mandatory rehearsal dates, including technical rehearsals, school performances, dress rehearsals, and show days for Tuck Everlasting.

ABOUT TECH REHEARSALS:

"Tech" involves both actors and backstage crew, making it essential for everyone to participate. Attendance at ALL technical (tech) rehearsals and scheduled performances is mandatory. With two casts, the performance schedule rotates; so ensure there are no conflicts with performances or tech week. Tech Week, when actors collaborate with the crew on technical aspects like sound, lights, costumes, and sets, begins on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 from 1:30 to 5:30pm and continues MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 THROUGH THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3 from 4:30-7:30pm.

ABOUT PERFORMANCES:

TUCK EVERLASTING will perform on the CIRCLE STAGE with PUBLIC PERFORMANCES:

EVERMORE CAST: OCTOBER 4 and 12 at 7:30pm, and OCTOBER 5 and 13 at 2:30pm
NEVERENDING CAST: OCTOBER 5 and 11 at 7:30pm and OCTOBER 6 and 12 at 2:30pm

DAYTIME SCHOOL PERFORMANCES are currently scheduled for:

EVERMORE CAST: OCTOBER 9 and 11 at 9:30 and 10:30am
NEVERENDING CAST: OCTOBER 8 and 10 at 9:30 and 10:30am

AVAILABLE ROLES:

MALE IDENTIFYING CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: 12-14 ROLES IN 2 CASTS OF 6-7 teens.

JESSE TUCK, over 100 years old but eternally 17, will be portrayed by a teen actor. He's the sole Tuck who embraces immortality as a blessing. Yet, he grapples with the isolation immortality brings to him and his family.

ANGUS TUCK, also known as "Tuck," is an ageless character in Tuck Everlasting, portrayed by an older teen actor. He serves as the patriarch of the Tuck family, exuding an air of anxiety and melancholy. Despite this, he demonstrates wisdom and compassion in his actions and words.

MILES TUCK, 22, is Mae and Angus's son, portrayed by an older teen. Once married with children, his wife left him after twenty years due to his unchanging appearance. Now bitter and closed off, Miles regrets drinking from the spring and hates living forever.

THE STRANGER IN THE YELLOW SUIT is an odd, unnamed character, portrayed by an older teen. His strangeness is evident in his dress and behavior. Obsessed with finding the Tucks' source of immortality, his madness and greed make him a danger to both the Tucks and the Fosters, who own the land with the spring.

THE CONSTABLE, head of the Treegap police, is a potentially comic character with a sharp wit and kind heart. Strictly adhering to the law, even when it's morally questionable, he will be portrayed by an older teen.

1 or 2 MALE TIMEKEEPERS. The Timekeepers, omniscient narrators aged 12 to 18, drive the story and become an intricate part of the action and storytelling. In our production, this ensemble will be central to a dramatic twist that ties them closely to the narrative.

FEMALE IDENTIFYING CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: 14-16 ROLES IN 2 CASTS OF 7-8.

WINNIE FOSTER, the 10-year-old protagonist, will likely be played by a 12 to 15-year-old actor. Independent and adventurous, she rebels against her family's rigid formalities but isn't fully prepared for the dangers she encounters.

GRANNY FOSTER, Winnie's grandmother, will be played by an older teen. Though not an “ancient relic,” she comically insists on propriety and order, like Aunt March in "Little Women."

MAE TUCK, over 100 years old but not aged 87 years, will be played by an older teen. As the Tuck family matriarch, she is kind and loving, showing her motherly nature by comforting Winnie after her family abducts the girl.

4 to 5 FEMALE TIMEKEEPERS. The Timekeepers, omniscient narrators aged 12 to 18, drive the story and become an intricate part of the action and storytelling. In our production, this ensemble will be central to a dramatic twist that ties them closely to the narrative.

F.A.Q.

“Where do I park?”
You can park in the lot right across from the Theatre Centre. It is free to park there ONLY IF you pick up a parking pass inside and place it in your car before you audition. We recommend that you pull up to the Circle Lobby doors and obtain the pass from the greeting station set up at the concession stand, before parking in the lot.

“There are multiple days of auditions, do I come to both of them?”
The short answer is: “no.” Please don’t come to both audition days, it doesn’t help your chances of getting a role. However, the callbacks for the show will be held on the Thursday immediately following the audition, so if you have a conflict with that day, please let us know at the audition.

“Is it okay to arrive at 5:00pm for the audition?”
Just be aware that there is an audition form that must be filled out before you can audition. So if you can arrive 15-30 minutes early, it would be less stressful for you and more helpful for us if you can have that done by the time the audition begins.

“How old do I need to be to audition?”
For this show, all actors must be 10 or older.

“Do I need to prepare a monologue?”
No. The only preparation necessary is that you have a list of ANY conflicts you might have with rehearsal. This is vital! We MUST know any days you will miss in ADVANCE of casting.

“Is there a fee or what does it cost to audition or perform?”
Participation at CTC is COMPLETELY FREE! You don’t have to purchase a script or your costume. All we ask is that you commit to arriving to scheduled rehearsals on time and agree to attend all the rehearsals and performances that are required.

“Where do I find out if I have a callback?”
“Like” our Facebook page and look for notices. If you don’t have Facebook, you can check back on this page. We typically announce callbacks the day after auditions. Callbacks are usually at 5:00pm on Thursday of that same week. If your name isn’t on the callback list, you might still be cast, so check back for a complete cast list on Friday, after 12 noon.

“When is the cast announced?”
Usually, a cast will be posted on our Theatre Centre Facebook page or on this page on Friday of the same week as the audition.

“Where is the play performed?”
This show will be performed in the Circle Theatre at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre.
