The Wiz digital monitor 1Tony Award-Winning Musical
Runs Sept. 15 through Oct. 1

The Theatre Centre opens our 2017-2018 season with THE WIZ, a Tony Award-winning show that's a musical twist on the tale of Dorothy's journey to the Land of Oz. THE WIZ, which runs September 15 through October 1, features a lively mixture of rock, gospel and soul. A multicultural cast of 40 under the guest direction of Shane Morrow brings this story to life with an urban vibe that is fresh and fanciful.

The storyline and characters are largely faithful to the 1939 movie version of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, but the interpretation makes for a spectacular show. A tornado, played by a colorful collection of dancers, sweeps up Dorothy's farmhouse and carries her to the strange and mystical Land of Oz. As she journeys down the yellow brick road to see the Wiz in Emerald City, Dorothy encounters a hip Scarecrow who wants to join her because he has a feeling he isn't going anywhere; an uptight Tin Man who needs Dorothy's help to hang loose again, and a cowardly Lion who has lost faith in the psychiatric help he's been getting from an owl. Together they “Ease on Down the Road,” undoubtedly the best known of the many memorable musical numbers in THE WIZ.

Maya Jaffar makes her CTC debut as Dorothy. Also leading the cast are Neshawn Calloway (Aunt Em/Glinda), Nicole Coleman (Addaperle), Darryl Wheeler (Scarecrow), Donel Solomon (Tin Man), Tiffany Williams (Lion), Karen McReynolds (The Wiz), and Donyea Mitchell (Evillene). Members of a strong ensemble of many newcomers play flying monkeys, poppies, crows, citizens of Oz, and other magical characters.

We've assembled a talented team to lend their creative vision to the production. Guest artists include Rondell Crier (co-set designer), Felicion McMillon-Diakhate (choreographer), Jacquelyn Cox (lighting designer), Phillip Jones (sound designer), Philip Luckey (projections design), Cacey Willliams (lighting assistant), and Terrance Wright (costume designer).

Performances are Sept. 15-16, 21-24, 28-30, and Oct. 1. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m., Thursday shows are at 7 p.m., and Sunday matinees start at 2:30 p.m.
